What is areca leaf?

Areca is a type of palm leaf that comes from areca palm trees, also known as golden cane palm. It is native to Madagascar but can be found in a variety of places, typically tropical regions and is especially popular in southern Asia. The trees are known for producing betel nut seeds which are chewed like tobacco.

Leaves are naturally discarded from areca palm trees every few weeks and are collected from the floor of the forest. That means that leaves don’t have to be picked off of trees and trees don’t have to be cut down to gather the leaves. The trees main production is betel nut seeds and the palm leaves are waste - until palm leaf plates, which makes use of the wasted pieces of the trees.

Although not a great option for an indoor plant, areca palms have become increasingly popular as houseplants since the 1980s, when NASA scored them first in air cleaning experiments and deemed them the best houseplants for cleaning the air.

Areca palm leaves are turned into plates in just a few steps. The leaves are cut, steamed and pressed into the desired plate shape. Palm leaf plates are appealing because they are one-hundred percent natural and chemical free, even when hot foods are plated on them.

Areca palm leaves are extremely sturdy when dried out which makes them an ideal material for eco-friendly disposable plates. They are one-hundred percent biodegradable and compostable. They are a fantastic alternative to plastic or Styrofoam.

If you are looking for eco-friendly, sturdy and affordable disposable plates, areca palm leaf plates are the way to go!
