Bagasse, Areca, & Bamboo: Intro to Compostable Materials
New to all the new materials being used in recyclable, compostable party supplies? Here’s a little rundown.
Skewers
Skewers are great when you need to throw together a party with friends. Slice up some fruits and veg and put a handful of bamboo spears on the table and you’re set to go. No need for lots of silverware and utensils, which makes clean up a breeze! Plus, they are compostable and, if not too soiled, can be washed and given a second life (garden markers?).

Bagasse
What’s bagasse? Simply stated, it’s the pulp by-product of sugar cane. Some clever person found a way to use the fiber left over from sugar extraction to make these surprisingly sturdy plates. Totally compostable and shreddable.
These super cute little leaf-shaped plates are wonderful for serving dessert mousse, samples, or pairings at a wine tasting.
Areca Leaf Plates
I love areca leaf plates. Areca is just a type of palm leaf. Plates made from palm leaf are die cut and steamed into shape - no nasty chemicals used.
We do a lot of summertime entertaining at my house and I’m always torn between washing up in the kitchen and spending more time with my guests. Rather than use wax coated paper or [gulp'] styrofoam, I use palm leaf plates. If the food isn’t too messy, I’ll ask people to put a mark on their plate to reuse for the weekend. While not technically washable (they’ll get soggy and warp if immersed in water), I’ve been known to rise and reuse.
